Combining Traditions and Radical Visions to Revision Food Systems: Two Extraordinary Young Agrarians Share their Strategies

Around the world, diverse young farmers, fishers and food advocates from historically disenfranchised groups are working in a wide range of ways to foster local food sovereignty with a focus on equity, empowerment and cultural survival. In this session, two remarkable young food producers and activists from extremely different communities and regions, one rural and Arctic, the other urban in a temperate climate, will share their unique experiences seeking to develop just and healthy food systems for their long-marginalized communities. With: ab banks, a West Oakland urban farming/gardening leader and community organizer who provides food to East Bay community members using strategies drawn from urban agroecology and Black wellness and food autonomy movements; and Alaskan native, Deenaalee Chase-Hodgdon, a Deg Xit’an Dene and Sugpiaq subsistence and commercial fisher, storyteller, and activist working on sustainable fisheries and Indigenous economic and cultural revitalization.
